Election Campaign Thank Yous from the Whatcom Democrats Chair
Congratulations on the 2017 election cycle Whatcom County! We want to thank everyone that was part of this season for all the hard work and dedication.
We’d like first to thank each and every one of our endorsed candidates for stepping up to run; this commitment to the community is honorable, no matter the outcome. Barry Buchanan, Rud Browne, Todd Donovan, Rebecca Boonstra, Michael Shepard, Barry Wenger, Roxanne Murphey, Gene Knutson, Pinky Vargas, Michael Lilliquist, Kate Hansen, Jenn Mason. We value you, and your individual teams that were able to see you to election day! Ten of our twelve endorsed candidates were elected!
This year we had an issue-based campaign working on honoring our membership’s endorsement of the no jail tax campaign, which coordinated closely with our campaign committee. On this team was Andrew Reding, Genevieve Jones, Andrew Eckels, Tyler Swank, Heather Flaherty, and Lisa McShane. The jail tax was rejected with a 17 point margin!
The Whatcom Democrats’ coordinated campaign helped bring together all of the campaigns and help with some of the workload. This year’s campaign was co-chaired by Abe Jacobson and Karlee Deatherage, field organizer Anna Berch-Norton, and many volunteers who dedicated countless hours of work to the party. John Seylor, communications committee chair, aided the coordinated campaign with professional design for the campaign literature. We appreciate all of the help, and we are grateful for the time spent helping the campaigns to victory.
There are many moving parts during campaign, and one of the fastest of those is finances. Gwen Groden, Heather Christianson, Peggy Borgens, and Don Starr worked seamlessly through managing the incoming finances of the campaign. Heather was also the main event planner for the Eleanor Roosevelt Dinner, which helped raise upwards of $10k for the campaign. During this campaign season, our main campaign fundraiser was Lisa McShane, and she shared our vision with supporters and was able to help bring in upwards of $52k for the 2017 election cycle.
We are especially grateful to the donors. Many individuals and organizations support the work we do. Every dollar counts, and we are honored to work towards common goals and the friendships we sustain to the new friendships we have been able to create.
Our office volunteers and staff were also an asset. Gwen Groden, as always, did an incredible job keeping everyone on the same page. The office staff and volunteers not only got us through this election, but ensured that the day-to-day tasks that got to election day and helped wrap up and keep the doors open for everything afterwards.
We’d also like to thank every person that voted and encouraged others to vote!
